Umiam, June 1: The ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, in collaboration with ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Ri Bhoi, launched the month-long national flagship programme, “Khet Bachao Abhiyan,” on Monday, aimed at promoting soil conservation and sustainable agricultural practices among farmers. The campaign will run from June 1 to June 30, 2026.
The launch event marked a renewed commitment towards protecting soil health and strengthening sustainable farming systems across the region. The programme was attended by Dr. G. Kadirvel, Director of ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam; Mr. Rodonald Majaw, Project Manager of the Meghalaya Basin Management Agency (MBMA); and several community leaders, including Shri Duruth Majaw, State President of Kisan Morcha, Shri Richard Lyngdoh, President of Kisan Morcha Umroi, and Shri Donlang Nongbri, State General Secretary of Kisan Morcha.
During the inaugural programme, speakers highlighted the importance of safeguarding soil resources and lauded the national vision of promoting sustainable agriculture through improved soil management practices.
As part of the campaign, a training programme on “Green Manuring and Natural Farming for Sustainable Soil Health” was organized for 120 farmers from Ri Bhoi District, including 87 women and 33 men. The programme combined classroom sessions with practical field demonstrations to equip participants with cost-effective and science-based farming techniques aimed at restoring soil fertility and reducing dependence on chemical inputs.

Experts explained the benefits of green manuring through the cultivation of crops such as sunhemp, dhaincha, and cluster bean, which help improve soil structure, enhance microbial activity, and naturally enrich the soil with nitrogen. Farmers were trained on crop selection, sowing schedules, biomass incorporation, and management practices designed to maximize nutrient availability and improve soil productivity.
The training also focused on natural farming methods, including the preparation and use of compost, Jeevamrit, and fermented plant extracts. Participants were encouraged to adopt crop rotation and intercropping systems to improve soil health, reduce pest infestations, and enhance farm resilience.
According to experts, these sustainable farming practices can significantly improve water retention, reduce soil erosion—particularly in the hilly terrain of Ri Bhoi—and contribute to long-term agricultural productivity while lowering input costs for farmers.
Officials stated that the objective of the Khet Bachao Abhiyan is to expand the adoption of sustainable soil management practices throughout the district, thereby improving farmers’ livelihoods while ensuring the conservation of vital soil resources for future generations.
The month-long campaign is expected to further strengthen awareness among farming communities about the importance of healthy soils as the foundation of sustainable and climate-resilient agriculture.
