Shillong, May 26: Members of the Committee on Government Assurances of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly have expressed satisfaction with the progress of works in three major sports projects – Mawkhanu football stadium and Umsawli indoor stadium (both located in New Shillong) and water sports centre at Umtham in Ri-Bhoi District.
A delegation of the committee led by its chairman Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar and members comprising of Mazel Ampareen Lyngdoh, Celestine Lyngdoh and Ollan Singh Suin today inspected the three projects and were accompanied by Mawryngkneng Block Development Officer Sanjay D. Shira and Chief Engineer (Sports) Manhiam Marbañiang.
The 40,000-seater football stadium at Mawkhanu is the biggest in India. The project is estinated at Rs 732 crore.
The deadline for completion of the stadium is late 2028 as per the tender agreement. KPC Projects Limited is the contractor executing the work.
The committee members also inspected the Umsawli indoor stadium where an aquatic stadium and tennis courts of international standards are being constructed.
The committee members also visited the water sports centre at Umtham in Ri-Bhoi District where the work is on to build a dedicated canoe slalom course to promote water sports such as canoeing, kayaking and white water rafting. The project is estimated at Rs 21 crore.
