Shillong, February 09: The Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad K Sangma, was among the 19 people who were conferred the CBCI National Awards 2026. The newly constituted national awards was conferred upon for the first time to Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma and the other awardees during the 37th CBCI General Body Meeting held today at St John’s Medical College, Bengaluru.
The CBCI National Awards honours individuals who have rendered exceptional service to the Church, society, and the nation, embodying Gospel values and making significant contributions to human dignity, justice, education, leadership and innovation.
The awards affirm CBCI’s commitment to celebrating lives that embody faith in action, prophetic witness, intellectual contribution, pastoral leadership, participation in nation building and selfless service—across clerical, religious, and lay vocations. Through these awards, the CBCI seeks to inspire future generations to embrace lives of commitment, integrity, and compassionate service, rooted in the values of the Gospel and the constitutional ideals of justice, fraternity, and human dignity to build the nation.
Speaking during the occasion, Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma, expressing his gratitude to CBCI said, “This award instituted by the CBCI reinforces in us the belief that the work we are doing holds value and makes a difference and it motivates us to bring out the values that the church teaches us.”
The Chief Minister acknowledged the contribution of the Catholic church in shaping the youth especially in the North Eastern region and assured of working together with the church. “These are challenging times faced by churches in different parts of the country but we will work together,” he said and urged the Catholic youths and Christians youths to become leaders not only in politics but in various other fields.
Among others present were Mr. K J George, Minister for Energy, Government of Karnataka, Bishops of India, Church leaders, invited dignitaries, and representatives from civil society.
