Nongpoh, June 26: In observance of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on June 26, the Ri Bhoi District Police organised a series of awareness programmes across educational institutions and public venues to promote the fight against substance abuse.
This year’s global observance, themed “Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan – Viksit Bharat Ki Pehchaan” (Drug-Free India Campaign – The Identity of a Developed India), underscores the importance of building a drug-free society through prevention, education and community participation. The campaign places particular emphasis on children and young people, recognising the need to instil awareness and positive values from an early age.
Over the past several days, police personnel from police stations and outposts across the district conducted interactive awareness sessions highlighting the dangers of drug abuse, the consequences of illicit trafficking, and the importance of making healthy lifestyle choices.

The programmes were held at CFC Hall and the Umsning Police Station; Mahatma Gandhi University in Byrnihat; Patharkmah Higher Secondary School; Sachit Christian Secondary School, Umtrai; Plielad Secondary School, Mawlasnai; RCUP School, Umtyrnga, the Pillangkata Outpost and Umtyrnga Presbyterian School; Lamalong LP School under Umsohlait Police Station; Khanapara Bazaar; Umshru RMSA Secondary School under Rani Jirang Border Outpost; Mynken Christian Higher Secondary School, Bhoirymbong; the Durbar Hall at 5th Mile, Kyrdemkulai; and Kendriya Vidyalaya, NEPA, under Umiam Police Station.
During the sessions, officers urged students and members of the public to remain vigilant against the menace of drugs, resist peer pressure, and actively contribute to creating a healthier and safer community. The initiative forms part of the district police’s ongoing efforts to strengthen public awareness and support the national campaign for a drug-free India.
