Shillong, July 7: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested the Project Director of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Shillong, along with two private individuals, over allegations of seeking illegal gratification to facilitate the release of a contractor’s pending dues.
In a statement, the CBI said the case was registered on July 1 after receiving a complaint alleging that the NHAI official demanded ₹12 lakh to clear a pending bill of ₹13.38 crore.
Investigators alleged that the official did not seek the entire amount at once but instructed the complainant to first pay ₹4 lakh. The complainant was reportedly asked to hand over the money to an intermediary in Guwahati, who then directed that it be delivered to another individual.
Following the complaint, the CBI organised a trap operation. During the operation, one of the accused private individuals was allegedly apprehended while accepting the ₹4 lakh, which investigators say was the first instalment of the demanded bribe.
The agency subsequently arrested all three accused, including the NHAI Project Director. Searches were also carried out at premises linked to the accused as investigators sought additional evidence.
The CBI said the probe remains in progress and is aimed at establishing the full circumstances of the alleged bribery network, including whether any other individuals were involved.
