IIT Guwahati To Study Slope Vulnerability Of Pynursla Road

Shillong, Jul 6: Experts from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati will conduct a study on the slope vulnerability of the Shillong – Pynursla – Dawki road which is now under construction.

This was informed by Deputy Solicitor General of India, Nitesh Mozika before the Meghalaya High Court’s division bench of Chief Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice Wanlura Diengdoh during hearing of a suo motu PIL on the road project.

According to Mozika, the study by IIT Guwahati on the slope vulnerability of the road would be done in two phases.

He also said that IIT Guwahati has approved a revised quotation on the expenditures involved in the study. He informed that National Highway Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL) has paid 30 per cent as advance payment of the quoted amount.

The High Court in today’s hearing has asked IIT Guwahati to speed up the study and submit its report as early as possible.

The High Court has also listed the matter for hearing on July 27.

The Shillong – Dawki road widening project is funded by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

While the four-lane stretch from Umshyrpi to Hynñiew Mer in Upper Shillong has been mostly completed, the work is still moving in a slow pace in the Mylliem – Umtyngngar stretch.

The stretch from Laitlyngkot to Lyngkyrdem, Pynursla and Dawki is vulnerable to landslide. A number of lives have been lost in the rockslide and landslide incidents in the past in this stretch.

Recently, the entire chunk of the road just below Laitlyngkot was washed away by heavy rain resulting in total snap of road traffic to almost all of Ri-War Mihngi area.

The authorities have identified a temporary route from Laitlyngkot to Lyngkyrdem for movement of only light vehicles.
