Shillong, July 7: Despite facing numerous shortcomings that still need improvement in their football development compared to more advanced footballing nations, and although they were unable to achieve their target of bringing laurels to the state, the young footballers of Ryntih Football Club returned safely to Meghalaya today after participating in the International Iber Cup 2026 held in Estoril, Lisbon, Portugal.
It may be recalled that the Under-14 team of Ryntih Football Club left Meghalaya on June 28 to participate in the prestigious International Iber Cup 2026, which was held in Portugal from June 29 to July 5. The team departed Portugal yesterday, travelled via Dubai before flying to Delhi, and from there arrived at Guwahati Airport today, where they were warmly received by their family members, supporters and well-wishers of Ryntih Football Club.
The Under-14 squad comprised 24 young players, who represented the club at the International Iber Cup 2026. The contingent was led by the club’s CEO, Dr. Evarist Myrsing, accompanied by Head Coach Bah Wallamkupar Kharpran, General Secretary Bah Ridorkpar Marbaniang, Manager Bah Shiningstar Rymthai, and other officials.

Speaking to the media, Head Coach Bah Wallamkupar Kharpran expressed his happiness at the team’s safe return to the state. He said the opportunity to participate in the tournament was truly a blessing for the young players, who, despite many limitations, gave their best to showcase their talent while competing against teams from countries that are far more advanced in football.
He further stated that around 500 teams from across the world participated in the Iber Cup 2026, and Meghalaya, through Ryntih Football Club, had the honour of representing India at the prestigious tournament. He described the experience as a tremendous learning opportunity for the young footballers.
Bah Kharpran also said that the team’s participation became possible because of the support extended by the Meghalaya Government, particularly Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, Sports Minister Bah Wailadmiki Shylla, Pynthorumkhrah MLA Bah A.L. Hek, MLA Bah Adelbert Nongrum, Additional Deputy Commissioner of South West Khasi Hills Bah Labiang T. Tariang, along with many other well-wishers. He also acknowledged the invaluable support of the players’ parents and family members.

Meanwhile, both Head Coach Bah Wallamkupar Kharpran and CEO Dr. Evarist Myrsing expressed their satisfaction at having the opportunity to lead the young players to the Iber Cup. They said that although the team could not secure victories or bring home honours, the tournament served as an invaluable learning experience. It enabled the players and officials to identify the team’s strengths and weaknesses and understand the areas that require improvement before participating in major international football tournaments featuring teams from around the world, they added.
