Shillong, June 15: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on Monday announced National Highway projects worth nearly Rs. 39,800 crore covering around 450 km across Meghalaya, aimed at boosting connectivity and economic growth in the state.
Speaking at the inaugural session of the North East India Infrastructure Summit & Exhibition (NEIINFRA 2026) in Shillong, Gadkari said the flagship Shillong–Silchar 4-Lane Greenfield Corridor, estimated at Rs. 23,000 crore, will significantly reduce travel time and improve connectivity to Tripura, Mizoram and Manipur.
He also announced the Jorabat–Barapani 4-Lane Greenfield Corridor worth Rs. 8,500 crore, which is expected to cut travel time between Guwahati and Shillong from over two hours to about one hour.
Another major project, the Darugiri–Baghmara–Dalu section of NH-217, estimated at Rs. 4,000 crore, will enhance connectivity in Garo Hills and border areas adjoining Bangladesh.
Gadkari further highlighted key projects including the Shillong–Dawki Corridor, Tura–Dalu Road, Tura Bypass, Pynursla Bypass and NH-127B connectivity linked to the Dhubri–Phulbari Bridge.

Addressing the summit, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said the Northeast has entered a new era of peace, stability and growth. He noted that Meghalaya ranks among the fastest-growing states in the country and has invested heavily in road infrastructure to support economic development.
Nagaland Chief Minister Dr. Neiphiu Rio said the Northeast is witnessing rapid transformation under the Act East Policy and stressed the importance of collaboration between governments, investors and industry stakeholders.
The two-day summit brought together policymakers, industry leaders, investors and government representatives to explore opportunities in infrastructure, logistics, tourism, digital connectivity and industrial growth across the Northeast.
