Shillong, Apr 27: Amidst public criticism about the recurring loss of lives during the widening and construction of the Laitlyngkot – Pynursla – Dawki road, cabinet minister and MLA from Dawki Constituency, Lahkmen Rymbui said he was satisfied with the latest measures to ensure public safety.
Speaking to media persons today, Rymbui said the State government is taking steps to ensure that disasters such as landslide, rockslide etc are prevented during the process of the road project.
He was replying to queries by the media about the recent death of two persons when huge boulders fell on the pick up truck they were travelling at Mawlieh near Pynursla.
“Time and again, the SDO of Pynursla Civil Sub-Division has already issued restrictions on movement of vehicles along this stretch,” Rymbui said adding, “Whatever that happened is unfortunate.”
Informing that an enquiry is being conducted by the SDO of Pynursla Civil Sub-Division into the tragedy, Rymbui said that measures are being taken for the safety of the commuters.
“I am not satisfied that human lives have been lost but at the same time I’m satisfied with the steps taken to see that no more disaster takes place,” he said.
He pointed out that safety measures have been inititiated by the implementing agency (NHIDCL) along the entire vulnerable stretch from Laitlyngkot to Pynursla including the removal of rocks at Mawlieh that posed serious risks to commuters and travellers.
