Shillong, Apr 23: Shillong on Thursday woke up to two incidents of suicide by hanging.
The two incidents occured at Laban and Lai Mer.
The body of Mithun Gurung (aged 38 years) was found hanging on the flag pole of Laban Police Station in the early hours of Thursday. The body was found by a Home Guard volunteer on duty who immediately alerted the policemen at the police station.
According to East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police (SP) Vivek Syiem, the Home Guard volunteer had first seen a man standing outside the gate of the police station.
“The man entered the gate of the police station at 6:43 AM and after five minutes, the Home Guard volunteer found the body of the man hanging on the flag pole,” Syiem said.
The SP stated that the man is suspected of being mentally disturbed and has a history of alcoholism and hallucination.
As far as the suicide case at Lai Mer, Upper Shillong, Syiem said that the deceased has been idenfied as Vijay Kumar Singh (aged 21 years) of Riatsohkhlur.
Singh’s body was found hanged near the State Bank of India’s ATM kiosk located on the roadside at around 5 AM.
Stating that the body was partially hanged, Syiem said, “The body was stuck on the ledge of the window and there was a rope on the man’s neck. It looks like a case of partial hanging. We will send the body for post mortem examination to confirm.”
