Shillong, June 4: A major political development has emerged within the United Democratic Party (UDP) following the resignation of one of its senior leaders from both the party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) and its primary membership.
In a resignation letter addressed to the President and General Secretary of the UDP, the leader stepped down from the post of Vice President of the party’s Central Executive Committee, citing serious differences over the party’s decision to support National People’s Party (NPP) candidate James P.K. Sangma in the upcoming Rajya Sabha election.
The former UDP leader said the decision by UDP legislators to back the NPP candidate without the mandate of the party’s Central Executive Committee had left him deeply disappointed and unable to reconcile with the party’s current direction.
Expressing concern over the move, he stated that the UDP is currently contesting against the NPP in the Shillong Parliamentary by-election while simultaneously supporting an NPP candidate in the Rajya Sabha election. According to him, such a stance sends a contradictory message to the electorate and undermines the credibility of the party’s political position.
He further maintained that politics should be guided by principles, consistency and honesty towards the people, adding that actions perceived as politically opportunistic could weaken public confidence in democratic institutions and diminish the moral authority of political parties.
The outgoing leader said that, having consistently advocated for principled politics and accountability in public life, he could no longer continue in a leadership position while remaining silent on an issue he considered significant.
Announcing his resignation with immediate effect, he stated that the decision was necessary in order to remain true to his convictions and principles.
Despite stepping down from the party, he expressed gratitude to party workers, supporters and well-wishers for their support throughout his political journey and affirmed his commitment to continue serving the people of Meghalaya and working for causes that he believes are in the best interests of the state.
The resignation comes at a politically significant time, with the Rajya Sabha election scheduled later this month and campaigning underway for the Shillong Parliamentary by-election.
