Nongpoh, May 15: College of Agriculture, Kyrdemkulai Highlights initiatives and possible interventions contributing towards promoting alternative agricultural practices and enhancing nutrient use efficiency through organic and natural farming practices
The College of Agriculture, Kyrdemkulai, Meghalaya, under the Central Agricultural University, organized a press conference to highlight the published articles in respective local media significant research publications, academic achievements, and ongoing initiatives of the college aimed at promoting sustainable agriculture and farmer-centric innovations in the North Eastern Hill region.
The press conference was attended by Prof. Ram Singh, Dean, College of Agriculture, Kyrdemkulai; Prof. Ng. Janaki Singh, Professor (Soil Science); Dr. Nilima Karam, Associate Professor, (Entomology); Dr. Pramod Kumar Pandey, Assistant Maize Breeder; Dr. G. Bhuvana Priya, Assistant Professor, (Animal Science); Dr. M. Premi Devi, Assistant Professor, (Horticulture), Dr. Ng. Uma Devi Assistant Professor, (Entomology); Dr. Sabyasachi Majumdar, Assistant Professor (Soil Science), Dr. Amit Anil Sahane, Assistant Professor (Agronomy), Dr. Amarjeet Kumar, Assistant Professor (Genetics and Plant Breeding); Dr. M. Victoria Devi, Assistant Professor (Social Science), Dr. S. K. Wanniang, Assistant Professor (Agronomy); Dr. Rocky Thokchom, Assistant Proferssor (Horticulture); Dr. Narendra Kumar, Assistant Professor (Plant Physiology).
During the interaction, the college emphasized its recent scientific publications in reputed journals covering important themes such as sustainable agriculture, natural farming, nutrient use efficiency, climate-resilient crops, organic farming, integrated farming systems, and innovative crop management practices suitable for the North Eastern region.
The Dean, Prof. Ram Singh, highlighted the college’s commitment towards promoting alternative agricultural practices through research, teaching, and extension activities. He emphasized the role of the institution in creating awareness on organic nutrient management, biofertilizers, vermicomposting, hydroponics, direct-seeded rice, integrated crop management, and climate-smart agricultural technologies for improving farmers’ livelihood and environmental sustainability.
The college also shared information regarding the ongoing research activities under different All India Coordinated Research Projects (AICRPs) including maize, millets, sunflower, safflower . Special emphasis was given to the promotion of natural farming practices, efficient utilization of organic resources, and strengthening sustainable food production systems in Meghalaya and the North Eastern Himalayan region.
The faculty members discussed various outreach programs, farmer training initiatives, student research activities, and collaborations aimed at enhancing agricultural productivity while conserving natural resources. The institution reaffirmed its dedication to supporting the vision of sustainable and eco-friendly agriculture through scientific interventions and community engagement.
The press conference concluded with an appeal to the media for wider dissemination of the published research articles and developmental initiatives undertaken by the College of Agriculture, Kyrdemkulai, for the benefit of farmers, researchers, students, and the general public.
