Preparations in Place for Lok Sabha Vote Count in Meghalaya

Officials in Meghalaya have finalized all arrangements for the crucial vote counting of the Lok Sabha elections scheduled for June 4, covering two constituencies in the state.

Today, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) BDR Tiwari led a meeting with representatives from various political parties at his office chamber, providing a comprehensive overview of the counting procedures.

According to the CEO’s office, the counting process will kick off promptly at 8:00 am. Across the seven districts falling under the 1-Shillong (ST) parliamentary constituency, 369 counting tables will be utilized, while 244 tables will serve across five districts under the 2-Tura (ST) PC. Notably, the largest assembly segment, 15-Mawlai, will undergo counting in nine rounds.

With eight counting centers designated for 1-Shillong (ST) PC and five for 2-Tura (ST) PC, the Election Commission of India has deployed a total of 18 counting observers (12 for 1-Shillong and 6 for 2-Tura PC) to ensure a fair and transparent process.

The Lok Sabha polls for Shillong and Tura were conducted on April 19, witnessing a turnout of 73.78% and 81.37% respectively. In Shillong, incumbent MP Vincent H. Pala (Congress) faces contenders like Ampareen Lyngdoh (NPP), Ricky A J Syngkon (VPP), Robertjune Kharjahrin (UDP), alongside two independent candidates – Lakhon Kma and Peter Shallam. Meanwhile, for the Tura seat, incumbent MP Agatha Sangma (NPP) is in a four-cornered battle against Saleng Sangma (Congress), Zenith Sangma (Trinamool Congress), and independent candidate Laben Marak.
