Shillong, June 2: After more than three weeks of border tension, people of Lapangap village in West Jaiñtia Hills will be able to go back to their paddy fields from tomorrow to resume cultivation activities.

A high level meeting between political representatives and senior officials of both Meghalaya and Assam was held today at the Assam Police Camp at Tahpat near Lapangap.

The Meghalaya side was led by Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar while the Assam side was led by Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) Chief Executive Member Tuliram Ronghang.

The meeting agreed that residents of Lapangap will resume their cultivation at their rice fields in the foothill areas where there were differences between the two states.

It was also agreed that Karbis from Tahpat village will continue to cultivate banana, pineapple and ginger in the hilltops and slopes.

On the boundary demarcation, it was left to the state-level committees of the two states to decide.

The meeting also decided that the two sides would maintain peace and tranquility and refrain from any activity that may create disturbance or affect the law and order situation.

Besides Dhar, the Meghalaya side was also represented at the meeting by Commissioner & Secretary Cyril V. Diengdoh, Home Secretary Garod L S N Dykes, Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) Chief Executive Member Thombor Shiwat, West Jaiñtia Hills Deputy Commissioner Abhinav Singh and Superintendent of Police Jagpal Singh Dhanoa.

The Assam side was also represented by Additional Secretary (Home) Ajay Kumar Tiwari, West Karbi Anglonh Deputy Commissioner Preeti Kumari, Superintendent of Police Dinesh Kumar and several MDCs of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council.

Today’s meeting is a follow up to the meeting held between Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his Meghalaya counterpart Conrad Sangma in Guwahati on May 19 to discuss ways to end the stalemate at Lapangap.
