Election officials prepared to conduct Rajya Sabha poll in Meghalaya

Shillong, May 29: The State Election Department is prepared to conduct the election to the Rajya Sabha  scheduled for June 18.

“We are fully prepared for the conduct of the biennial election of Rajya Sabha in Meghalaya,” Chief Electoral Officer B D R Tiwari told media persons today after his meeting with representatives of political parties to brief them on the schedule for the election.

He also said that the tenure of the current MP to the Rajya Sabha from Meghalaya Dr. Wanwei Roy Kharlukhi is due to expire on June 21 and as such the election has to be held by June 20.

Briefing about the schedule for the poll fixed by the Election Commission, Tiwari said that the notification for conduct of the election will be issued on June 1. The last date for filing of nomination by candidates is June 8. Scrutiny of nominations will be conducted on June 9 and the last date for withdrawal of nomination by candidates is June 11.

“The date of polling is June 18 from 9 am to 4 pm. Counting of votes will be on the same day at 5 pm and the election process will be completed before June 20,” Tiwari said.

He also informed that officials of the Election Department along with officials of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly today morning inspected the venue in the State Assembly hall where the polling will be conducted.

“We found the venue to be satisfactory as per the norms, schedule, layout etc provided by the Election Commission of India,” Tiwari said.

The CEO also stated that although some political parties did not send their representatives to the briefing, however those who were present were briefed regarding filing of nominations including submission of Form 2C, affidavit in Form 26, security deposit, author affirmation, Form A and Form B in the case of party candidate including the provision related with Form C1 to C8 which are mandatory.

He also said that political parties were briefed on the Supreme Court’s directions  relating to publicity of the criminal antecedents by the candidate.

He also said that political parties were informed that MLAs of political parties taking part in the voting are required to show their marked ballot paper only to the authorised agent of their own party and not to any other party agent.

“Independent MLAs are prohibited from showing their ballot paper to any agent,” he added.
